Crossing borders at BDB

Your first job is always scary. You are unsure of what to expect – will you fit in? Who will you talk to? What should you wear? However, what I found most daunting was the thought that I had only graduated from university one month ago. I was still referring to myself as a student, and I couldn’t help but think – am I ready for this?

It all starts with the interview
Knowing what the right decision is for you all starts with the interview. In my opinion, when in an interview, it is incredibly important to ‘wow’ the company. However, it is as much the interviewer’s priority to convince you that the company is the best choice to make. When I first interviewed at BDB, I was blown away by the enthusiasm that the employees had for the company. They talked so highly of the staff and the organisation, that when I was offered the job I could not help but feel proud that I would become part of such an inspiring team.

Accepting the nerves
In hindsight, I didn’t need to worry about anything. In fact, I felt quite silly thinking about the time wasted pondering these unanswerable questions. Originally from bonnie Scotland, the job required me to move, so it was a case of packing my bags, waving goodbye to deep-fried mars bars and haggis suppers and crossing the border to England. My first week at BDB had begun!

Starting new beginnings
BDB is an inviting and exciting place to work – beyond anything I ever expected. I wasted no time getting stuck in once I had accepted the job. Thrilling, demanding, glamorous and red is how I would describe my first week at BDB. It was an intense mix of emotions and colour. Consultancy work is intense, fast-paced and exhilarating. No day is the same – you consistently use different skills and work on a varied portfolio of interesting campaigns. It is a job that isn’t for everyone, but I feel in my prime here.

At first, I lacked confidence, however, within an hour I was introduced to all my new colleagues and led through a number of training sessions, which helped put my mind at rest. This was something I did not expect for my first week, I assumed I would be at the ‘bottom of the pecking order’ and assigned administration jobs and desk research. However, BDB is not like this. The team see that you are young, eager to learn and need training, so they provide you with what you need. I am someone who learns best by being thrown into the deep end, a tactic that is not for the faint hearted, but at BDB they adjust their training to best suit you.

Where I stand now
Everyone is incredibly kind and open to any questions I have, silly or not, ensuring that I feel at home. I have met some amazing people with a variety of skills I can learn from, and I am settling in well. There is still so much I need to do to improve my industry knowledge, but this is only the beginning of my career and I am excited to see where it leads.

We’re always on the lookout for skilled and talented people at BDB. If you’re interested in starting a career with one of the UK’s leading international b2b marketing communications consultancies, email [email protected].
